Despite the ongoing financial strain being felt by millions, new figures have revealed that as a nation we will gift an eye-watering £12.6billion in unnecessary tax to the taxman this year.
According to professional advice website unbiased.co.uk in its annual Tax Action Report, on average £421 will be wasted per individual taxpayer this year.

According to independent financial advice site unbiased.co.uk, missed tax relief on pensions contributions and charity donations and missing out on inheritance tax savings also rank highly — with ISAs rated the fifth biggest area of tax waste at £403million.

Unbiased's boss Karen Barrett said: "This year marks our second highest tax wastage figure on record, only marginally falling from a record high last year.

That’s an average of £421 each. Its findings show the biggest area of wastage is tax credits, accounting for more than £7.26 billion.
