Asylum & Immigration Solicitors

If you arrive in the UK and are seeking asylum, it is important to get expert legal advice straight away. The asylum application process is complicated and deadlines are strict. Finding an immigration solicitor who deals with asylum cases should be your first priority. Asylum solicitors who speak a wide range of languages are also available to asylum seekers.

You can apply for asylum as soon as you reach the UK. If you delay submitting your asylum application to an immigration solicitor then you may affect your ability to prove your claim is genuine. To be recognised as a refugee you must have left your country and be unable to go back because you have a well-founded fear of persecution because of your:-

  • Race

  • Religion

  • Nationality

  • Political opinion

  • Membership of a particular social group

Asylum seekers may also be given temporary permission to stay on humanitarian grounds.

Asylum Application Process

You can claim asylum either at your port of entry or, if you are already in the UK, at an asylum screening unit either in Croydon, South London or Liverpool. The asylum process involves:-

  • A brief screening interview where basic details are taken

  • A lengthier meeting with your case owner, the UK Border Agency official who will process your claim

  • Your asylum interview. This is your only chance to explain why you fear returning to your country

  • Your asylum decision. If you are given asylum you will receive a residence permit allowing you to stay in the UK for five years. If you are not, you can appeal the decision

Your application may take up to six months. The immigration solicitor will explain how to get help with money and housing through the National Asylum Support Service.

Immigration Solicitors Fees

If you have no money you may qualify for free advice through legal aid/public funding.
