Will the glossy Government Guide help people stay married for longer?
IFA Promotion issues its own hints and tips for financial wedded bliss
With couples being encouraged to think carefully before tying the knot, IFA Promotion, the organisation promoting the benefits of independent financial advice has issued some financial guidelines to help ensure the financial transition from single to married life is a smooth one.
David Elms, the Chief Executive of IFA Promotion said: "The decision to get married is clearly a momentous step in anyone's life. With divorce rates rising and the government spending some 27,000 on the publication "Married Life- A rough guide for couples today", marriage is very much on the political agenda. I would urge people to seek independent financial advice to ensure ongoing financial security."
Elms continued: "Marriage brings with it huge changes in people's financial situation, in order to ensure financial wedded bliss, couples should speak to an independent financial adviser who will be able to give tailor made financial advice both in the first instance, as well as ongoing.
IFA Promotion has produced a check list of questions to ask an IFA
Now that we have "responsibilities" towards each other should we consider taking out life assurance, income protection and critical illness cover?
- What do we need to do concerning a mortgage?
- Should we look at topping up our pensions?
- Would we be better off with a joint bank account, or to keep our finances separate?
- Do we need to change or make a will?
- If we are thinking about planning a family, do we need to consider education fee planning now?
- Should our existing policies be written in trust?
David Elms continued: "Your local independent financial adviser will be able to advise you on pensions, protection, mortgages, savings, investments and inheritance tax planning, infact any area of financial planning to help you fund a happy future life together"

Notes to Editors
1. Independent Financial Adviser Promotion
Independent Financial Adviser Promotion Ltd was established in 1989 to promote the value and accessibility of independent financial advice to the public. It represents over 9,000 registered individual independent financial advisers across the UK and is sponsored by 31 leading financial institutions.
IFA Promotion's central belief is:
"Consumers have a right to financial advice that is independent of the providers of financial products - i.e. independent financial advice."
Furthermore independent financial advice should be:
- Affordable. The option to take independent financial advice should be available, by right, to all - not just the wealthiest in society.
- Convenient. IFAs should be available in the location of the consumer's choice, wherever they live in the UK.
- Transparent. It must be clearly transparent to consumers who is able to offer independent financial advice and who is not.
