The making and breaking of New Year's Resolutions

Nearly half of 2005s resolutions wont have lasted the month

The Welsh win hands down at sticking to their resolutions

With the first month of the year already behind us almost 4 million (43%) of the British adults who began 2005 with a New Years resolution will have already let their good intentions flounder, according to research* from IFA Promotion, the organisation promoting the benefits of independent financial advice.

The annual New Years resolution research shows that:

  • Almost 9 million British adults intended to start 2005 with a New Years resolution, but over half admitted it would be the same as last year.
  • Of those embarking on a New Years resolution this year, 21% aimed to give up smoking and 17% hoped to lose weight.
  • More than 3.5 million adults in Britain planned to improve finances as a New Years resolution this year.
  • Those in Wales are the most committed to their resolutions with a staggering 84% lasting for longer than a month compared to a mere 28% of Scots!

Apart from the usual resolves to give up smoking or losing weight, finances were riding high on this years list. However, 88,000 of us are hoping to boost our finances this year by winning the lottery!  But, for those with slightly more realistic financial ideas for 2005, seeking expert independent financial advice is one way to ensure your good intentions stay on track.

David Elms, Chief Executive of IFA Promotion, commented, It is very encouraging to see so many people starting the year with resolutions- especially financial.  However, it can be easy to let these good intentions fall by the wayside.  An IFA could encourage you to persevere with your resolutions and improve your finances.
