“Even before today’s increase, fuel duty was the nation’s third most resented tax*, and the most resented tax among men and those over 55. But while historically high fuel costs have hit motorists in the pocket, millions could offset today’s rise in duty by focusing on the financial issues they can control, such as making use of their ISA allowance before Sunday’s deadline, checking they have the best mortgage deal, or making the most of tax relief on their pensions.
