Getting advice from a solicitor

Solicitors and barristers are both qualified as experts in the law.  The difference is that a barrister usually argues a case in court for you.

As a very general overview, you should expect a solicitor to review your issues, explain your options and then recommend a proposed course of action.  That sounds very theoretical and, in practice, you’ll probably have a more specific task in mind.  For example, it could be helping you to buy or sell a property (conveyancing), drawing up a will, or pursuing a claim for personal injury compensation.

When you’re looking for a solicitor to represent you, it’s important to choose someone who you’re comfortable with – you could be sharing personal information, and the relationship you have will be important.  Also, if your situation means that you would rather deal with a female solicitor, you can find a female solicitor using our solicitor search.

Finding a solicitor with offices relatively close to you is also something to think about, as most documents will need your signature.  You may need to show original documents – such as your passport or driving licence – as proof of identity.

Use our search tools to find a number of solicitors in your area.  Most will be happy to talk briefly about their services over the phone, and many offer a brief first meeting free of charge.
