ARE YOU A SERIAL RESOLVER? - WEST MIDLANDS

·        Nearly a million people in the West Midlands have made a New Year’s resolution.

·        Over four in ten people will lose their resolve within a month

·        6 million Brits nationwide aim to tackle their finances but planning is central to making best intentions last, says IFA Promotion

Nearly a million (0.97m) people in the West Midlands have started off 2003 with a New Year’s Resolution.  However, over four in ten (46%) will have lost their resolve within a month reveals new research* from IFA Promotion, the organisation promoting the benefits of independent financial advice.

The research, conducted by independent research agency, BMRB*, on behalf of IFA Promotion, shows that overall next year’s most popular resolutions look set to mirror those of previous years:

§           30% of the West Midland’s New Year resolvers are pledging to grapple with their finances.

§           Going on a diet is a priority for some, with a 7% resolving to lose weight in 2003.

§           One in ten people in the West Midlands want to eat more healthily.

§           17% are vowing to keep fit in 2003.

§           However more than four in ten (46%) will see their resolution fall by the wayside by the end of January.

When quizzed further about their finances:

·         Nearly half (47%) of people in the West Midlands plan to save more in 2003, helping address the UK long-term savings shortfall of £66bn, or an average £2,263 for six out of ten people this year alone**.

·         18% plan to combat Christmas spending sprees by vowing to get out of the red in the new year.

David Elms, Chief Executive of IFA Promotion commented, “It’s good to see that amongst the list of New Year’s resolutions, people in the West Midlands are planning on focusing on their finances in the New Year, especially in the current economic climate, when making the most of your money has never been more important.”

He concluded, “Rather than recycle a perennially unsuccessful resolution, this time round we’re urging people to commit to sort out their finances.  By sharing some financial goals with an IFA, this may be one worthwhile resolution that lasts through to next year.”
