We were due to go into auto enrolment on 1st August this year. I went to a seminar on auto enrolment and I realised I needed independent advise to help choose the right workplace pension for my employees and to make sure we staged successfully. He did some research and chose a pension scheme for us. The pension scheme he chose lost its approval from HMRC only 2 weeks before we were due to stage. Fortunately, Gareth had kept a pension scheme as a back up and we still managed to stage on time. Gareth also liaised with our payroll providers. We were our payroll provider's 'guinea pigs' for auto enrolment but Gareth helped to smooth out any problems. Gareth also gave advice to any employees with existing pension schemes on whether or not it would be beneficial to transfer it into the new workplace pension. I have since transferred my own pension scheme into the new workplace pension scheme. We have successfully 'staged' as a company and my employees seem to be happy with the workplace pension scheme. They can access their own private online portals. Only one person has opted out of the pension scheme-someone who has gone on maternity leave for a year. I expect that she will rejoin the pension scheme when she returns. Some employees have increased their contributions. I chose to transfer my own pension into the new workplace pension as Gareth explained how much I would be saving every year with the lower charges and also how the pension provider lowers the risk of your portfolio as you get nearer to retirement age. The new workplace pension has achieved similar growth over the last five years to my previous pension-although I realise that this is not necessarily a guide to future performance. Also I can access my own private online portal at any time to see how the pension is performing.
