London is a popular place to live, offering a range of attractions and convenient travel, but it’s not for everyone.

The Telegraph has compiled a list of the top 10 places to live if you’re hoping to escape hectic city life without a lengthy commute. 

This list is based on house prices, great schools, green spaces, entertainment, travel time, and season ticket prices.

Now, we’ll run through the top 10 commuter towns that are easy to travel to from the city. 

10. Twyford, Berkshire

In at number 10 as one of the nicest London commuter towns is Twyford, a village in Wokingham, Berkshire.

It is around half an hour from London by train and only a few minutes from Reading via the Elizabeth Line. 

According to The Telegraph, it has four local schools rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ and an average house price of £566,645.

9. Basildon, Essex

In ninth place is Basildon, a town in Essex, which is just over half an hour from London by train. 

Over the last year, house prices in Basildon were, on average, £338,548, according to Rightmove.  

The town has many local parks and green spaces, with many schools rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.  

8. Folkestone, Kent

Folkestone is a coastal town in Kent that allows you to travel to London within an hour. 

The Telegraph says it’s the second cheapest commuter town in the county, with an average house price of £320,692 over the last year.  

Folkestone also has green spaces and beaches nearby, and many of the local schools are highly rated.

7. Aldershot, Hampshire

Aldershot, a town in Hampshire, is next on the list of best London commuter towns. A direct train to the city usually takes around 50 minutes. 

The town is within an hour’s drive of the Surrey Hills, and many of the local schools are rated ‘good’ by Ofsted. 

Average house prices in Aldershot are £326,678 over the last year, according to Rightmove.

6. Whyteleafe, Surrey

You can get to London from Whyteleafe, a village in Surrey, in just over half an hour. 

The Telegraph says Whyteleafe has the second cheapest season ticket to London and is surrounded by countryside. 

The average house price in the village over the last year is £378,786.

5. St Albans, Hertfordshire

St Albans, a cathedral city in Hertfordshire, is a 21-minute journey into London on the fastest train, making it one of the quickest commutes on this list. 

The city has many green spaces nearby, including Verulamium Park, and has many highly rated local schools. However, the average house price is high at £636,754.

4. Esher, Surrey

Another area in Surrey among the top 10 is the town of Esher, which is 30 minutes from London. 

There are many green spaces nearby, such as Claremont Landscape Garden and Esher Common, as well as attractions such as Chessington World of Adventures. 

House prices are higher than average in Esher at £994,798 over the last year, making it the most expensive area on this list. 

The area benefits from many local schools rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. 

3. Epsom, Surrey

Coming in at number three is Epsom, a town in Surrey with a commute time of just over 30 minutes.

The average house price over the last year is £569,045, and it’s only a 20-minute drive from Esher if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative.

There are many local family-friendly areas, such as Epsom Common, Horton Country Park, and Hobbledown Adventure Park and Zoo.

2. Watford, Hertfordshire

You can travel to London in 16 minutes from Watford, a town in Hertfordshire, making it the fastest commute on this list. 

There are many parks and attractions nearby, with several highly rated local schools. 

The average house price over the last year is £474,202

1. Roydon, Essex

In first place as one of the best places to live outside of London that's commutable is Roydon. It's a village in the Epping Forest district of Essex, which is around half an hour away from London.

The village has local green spaces such as Hunsdon Mead Nature Reserve, and many schools are rated ‘good’ by Ofsted.

The average house price in Roydon over the last year is £607,595.
